Rare (Omani) Buckler / Hand Shield from the Horn of Africa - 14842


This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 10 inches in diameter, 7 inches in height, made from a thick hide of Rhinoceros or an Hippopotamus and more than 15 mm thick. In this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The buckler is fitted with two heavy silver cross like decoration. Very good condition. This type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman, therefore they are sometimes defined as Omani Bucklers.
