Very Good Ethiopian Saif Sword - 6673
The Ethiopian name for the sword with a straight wide blade is , Very much like the Arabic general name for a sword. This one is a very good example: Broad blade 32 ˝ inches long, with central fuller extending to half of the blade length, and entirely etched in a floral design. Probably a British made one. The blade based shows the head of the Ethiopian emperor, most probably that of Menelik (also known as “Lion of Judea”). The other side is engraved in Amharic letters. The blade was nickel plated, (now partially worn). The handle is two massive pieces of Rhino horn with a clear fibrous structure, and excellent age patina. The pommel disk is a silver Teller coin dated 1780. Hide scabbard covered with tooled leather. Good condition. Some chips to the handle horn and the lower part of the scabbard leather cover is worn. This is an authentic rare sword from the late 19 C. |
