Rare Berber Sword, Morocco - 5540
This is a very rare and unusual sword used by Berber tribes from Morocco. The blade is a re-mounted blade of a Spanish military saber with the tip re-shaped and sharpened to a concave shape. Blade length is 26”, width 1 1/2". The hilt is made of layers of black horn riveted to the blade tang. The horn is inlaid with silver decorated pieces in various shapes. Of special interest are the initials JR, probably the owner initials, inlaid with silver wire into the grip horn. The scabbard is wood, covered with leather tooled in a delicate and beautiful design (see details below). The scabbard tip was extended up but unfortunately it is slightly broken. Total length in scabbard 34". Good condition. Minor pitting to the blade, few age cracks and chips to the grip horn and few silver pieces missing. The leather at the top of the scabbard is torn about 5”. By all means a very unusual sword. The few I have seen are not as complete and in good condition as this one. |
