Very Rare 18 C. Indian Sword with Silver Makara Head Handle - 14597
This sword is 18 C. or earlier, from Central or South India. The blade is of a classical shamshir shape 32 inches long with a 3 inches ricasso. The blade is most probably forged from wootz (Damascus, watered) steel, but it is not visible under the age patina, and we feel it is a too scarce sword to try and remove it. The handle is whole silver with the pommel beautifully shaped as a Makara head, the Hindu mythological creature. Total length 37 inches. Very good condition to age. Heavy age patina, with shallow pitting on one face of the blade. Very good untouched age patina on the silver handle.
This sword is coming from the collection of Jacques Desenfans, sold in Bonhams, April 2008
