Rare Buckler / Hand Shield from the Horn of Africa - 14244


This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 9 1/2 inches in diameter, 6 inches in height, made from a thick hide of an Hippopotamus and more than 1/2inch thick. In this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The buckler is fitted with two heavy brass cross like decoration. Very good condition. This type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman, therefore they are sometimes defined as Omani Bucklers.
