Fine Syrian Shamshir Sword with Wootz Blade. - 14217
Up for sale this fine Syrian Shamshir. The blade is forged from good quality wootz (Damascus, watered) steel. It is 30 inches long, curved and single edged. The cross guard is silver with some engraved letters or inscriptions. The ‘Syrian’ attribution comes mainly from the shape of the hilt. The grips are horn inlaid with brass and lead dots and decorated with brass nails. The cross guard is secured to the grips with a twisted silver wire. The pommel is silver and it is sharply down curving (very typical Arab style). Wood scabbard covered with leather and mounted with steel mounts decorated with typical silver koftgari work. Total length 40 inches. Very good condition. The sword is from the 19c, the leather and silver pommel are later. |
