Flyssa Style Knife with Cowrie Shells - 14060


This interesting knife is coming from North Africa, probably Algiers, in the style of a curved Flyssa knife but handle and scabbard are entierly covered with small Cowrie shells. In many parts of the world the cowrie shells symbolized the power of destiny and prosperity. Hence it is widely used to decorate tools and other artifacts including arms and armor. This one has a short curved blade engraved and inlayed with brass. Unusual item, not very old, mid 20C. or about. Length 18 inches.
