18 C. Indian Chain Mail Armor - 6336

We offer for sale a full mail shirt armor, Indian, from the 18th century and coming most probably from the armory of the Maharaja of Bikaner. It is composed of many thousands of separate rings each one interlaced with four other rings and each one individually riveted (see detailed Photo). This is the most authentic and strongest form of mail armor, in contrary to the later ones with open rings or coiled rings like in key holders. The shirt is 60 inches wide (tip to tip of sleeves fully stretched) and 32 inches long. It has two chest plates with three buckles in each plate, and three rows of scales on the back. The right breast plate is engraved with both Arabic and Sanscrit letters which indicate that this armor was in use on both the Hindu and islamic forces. Probably looted by one of the armies. Very good condition considering its age. Few small areas of missing rings and some darkened areas on the plates but very little pitting. IT IS VERY SELDOM THAT YOU SEE SUCH A RARE AND COMPLETE ITEM ON THE AUCTION. This is very precious and interesting addition to any Indian arm collection at a very reasonable price (mannequin not included). |
