Rare Jambiya with Hebrew inscription, Rhino Horn Hilt, Hadramout, Yemen - 13225

One of the rarest forms of the Arab Jambiya is the Gusbi from Hadramaut, an arid coastal area in the south of Yemen along the Arabian see. Although the blade and handle are similar to those on common Arab Jambiya, the Gusbi is characterized by the considerably up-curving scabbard tip, with the chape (scabbard tip) sometimes higher than the pommel. Here is such a classical example of a Gusbi. 7 ½ inches curved blade of good quality steel. Rhino horn grip with silver filigree decoration. The wood scabbard is covered with leather and mounted with silver locket and chape set with Carnelian stones (one missing). Very good condition. Interesting to note that the rear of the scabbard is signed with the jeweler Jewish name both Arabic and Hebrew letters |
