Moplah Sword from South India, Very Rare - 6260
The Moplah is the sword of the Coorg people from the Malabar coast of south west India. It is a very rare item by itself, and here we offer one with a scabbard which is even rarer. In my very long career in collecting and dealing with oriental arms and armor I have not seen even a single one like this with a scabbard, neither I know on any body else that have seen a Moplah with a scabbard before. The 13 inches long and more than 3 inches wide blade is slightly curved and with a flat central rib. The handle is hard wood with steel collar and brass decoration rondells. The scabbard is wood, open at the top to allow withdrawing of the blade. It is beautifully painted with red and gold colors in a floral design. Total length (in scabbard) 20 inches in scabbard. Very good condition. Minor edge damages and blackened areas on the blade. The leather belt that used to hold it in scabbard is torn. Minor paint worn. A very interesting and not a common weapon.
