Rare Buckler / Hand Shield from the Horn of Africa - 12487


This is a Buckler (hand shield) from the horn of Africa. It is 11 inches in diameter, 6 inches in height (Some what larger than such similar items), made from a thick hide of Rhinoceros or an Hippopotamus and more than 1/2inch thick. In this thickness it is believed it will stop a bullet from a small caliber pistol. The buckler is fitted with two heavy brass cross like decoration. Very good condition. Minor distortions. This buckler comes with an old label reads: BEDOUIN RHINO SKIN SHIELD, MUSCAT AND OMAN . This type of shields were sought after in all the area and were traded all the way from Africa through Zanzibar to Oman, therefore they are sometimes defined as Omani Bucklers.
