Fine Rare Kirash Sword, South India - 11221
This Indian sword is also known as Kirash or Karash and it is characterized by the slightly down curving blade with the edge on the concave side and the down curving spine with a false edge. This one is a fine exemplar 18 C., most probably from S. India. Wootz blade 30 inches, long with a 6 1/2 inches False edge. The blade shows a welding pattern known as Scarff welding about 9 inches below the handle. The unusual brass handle has the pommel shaped like the Yali a mythological powerful creature. Original scabbard with a (later) colorful fabric and pierced silver mounts. Total length 36 inches. Very Good condition. Minor blackened spots on the blade. |
