Fine Kattara Sword with European (?) Blade, Oman - 10257

Sword from Oman also known as Kattara. This type of sword, which is very similar to the older Islamic swords from the 11th 12th centuries, was popular in the Gulf countries during the 18th and the 19th Centuries. It has a very long 29 ½ inches, straight and double edge blade with a 6 inches central shallow fuller and a spatula shaped tip. There is what might be a maker mark on the blade, on both faces. The style of the blade, the quality of forging and the may be marking suggest a European origin. Hilt is wood, bound with leather strips and embroidered with silver wires. The pommel is a heavy square steel piece covered with silver and used as a counter weight to the very well balanced long blade. The scabbard is wood, painted black and mounted with beautifully engraved silver locket and chape and two silver rings. Total length is 42 inches. Very good condition. Very minor blackened spots on the blade.
