Early Khyber Sword with Ivory Grips - 9417

This short sword is also known as Khayber Sword or Salawar Yataghan. It is coming from the Khyber Pass area in the border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. This one is an early exemplar, probably late 18 C. The heavy blade is 17 inches long, 2 1/2 inches wide with a strong T spine. It is decorated with gold and silver koftgari work. The grips are elephant ivory, the bolsters and the grip strap are steel. Total length 23 inches. Good condition. Losses to the gold / silver work. Minor battle scars on the edge. The ivory grips shows a good heavy patina and few age cracks. The bolsters and part of the grip strap is a later restoration. No scabbard. Good impressive heavy sword. |
