Fine Early 19 C. Arab Saif / Saber with Wootz Damascus Blade - 8922

This fine sword is of Arabic origin, employing a very fine Persian made trade blade forged from very good wootz (Damascus) steel. The blade is 31 inches long, fullered and heavy, with a inches back edge. The root of the blade is chiseled with Arabic letters and the classical lion stamp withn traces of gold koftgari work, now gone. At some later stage the Arab figures 228 were added (just below the langet), probably standing for the year 1228 (1813 in the Gregorian calendar). This is probably the date when the blade was mounted with the present fittings (which make the blade even earlier). The grips are of Turkish style with bulbous pommel, carved from rhino horn. Steel cross guard and grip strap. Scabbard covered with black leather (recent) and mounted with big chased brass locket and chape and two steel carrying bands. Total length 37 inches. Very good condition. Small repair to the scabbard tip.
