Early Heavy Barong Sword with Laminated Blade and Good Provenance - 8876


This early Barong sword is from the 19 C. It is shown in a photograph taken in 1895 in Surabaya, java by Schmedes, a German photographer / Collector (?) (copy of the photo will be provided later). The massive blade, 15 inches long and 3/8 inches thick (10 mm) is beautifully forged from laminated steel folded at the tip (In a way, reminding the hairpin folding of Tibetan blades). Wood handle with big pommel and long silver collar. The wood scabbard is bound with threads (later ??). Total length 24 inches.
