Fine Early Arab Saif / Sword Dated 1821 - 8907

This sword is one of the many variations known as Saif in the Arab world. It is reminding the Moroccan Nimcha sword, and both probably have a shared origin but this is not a Nimcha. It is a very popular sword in Yemen and southern areas of the Arab peninsula and some reference suggests it was made in Zanzibar. The blade is in the style of a European trade blade but most probably is locally made, 30 inches long and fullered on its entire length. Horn handle set with silver plaques and silver cross guard. Wood scabbard covered with black leather and mounted with two silver mounts: a silver locket signed 1237 (1821 in the Gregorian Calendar and a central band with carrying rings. Total length37 inches. Very good condition. Blackened spots and shallow pits on the blade. Some losses to the silver decoration on the grip and hilt. A very unusual sword.
