Ethiopian Gurade Sword / Saber with French (?) Blade - 8690
The Ethiopian saber, also known as Gurade will usually employ a European imported blades, mounted with typical Ethiopian horn hilt. This specific one has a 31 inches long blade etched with floral design and with the Ethiopian Emperor emblem and marked with Latin letters: ACIER SUPEREN on one side and COMPTOIR EUROPEEN on the other. The hilt is made of two sectors of Rhino horn. The pommel cap is a big Austrian silver coin dated 1780. Original leather scabbard. Total length 36 inches. Very good condition. Minor blackened spots on the blade. Small chips on the horn handle. Scabbard shrink with age. |
