Unusual Parang Sword with Military Blade - 8032

Either it is a real Parang or not, this unusual sword comes probably from Java, Indonesia, late 19 to early 20 C. It employs a shortened blade that looks like a cut down from a European military sword. It is 20 inches long and slightly up-curving. The handle is beautifully carved wood and the scabbard is in the general shape of a Parang scabbard, bound with braided rattan and silver bands (several missing). The scabbard mouth and the belt holder are horn. The scabbard tip is bone. Total length (in scabbard) 29 inches. Very good condition. A small damage to the blade tip. Silver bands on the scabbard are missing. This sword comes from the collection of the Calgary Military Institute, Canada and it is marked on the blade spine and on the scabbard mouth with the institute inventory number MI -1764. An unusual sword.
