This type of knife / dagger is called “PIHA KAHETTA”, and it is the traditional knife of the Sinhalese from Sri-Lanka (Ceylon). It always has a single edged short heavy down curving blade, and the hilt is elaborately decorated in various techniques of decorative arts. This specific example is of greater dimensions than usual, 9 ˝ inches long, almost ˝ inch thick blade and it is inlaid with brass. The bolsters are steel / brass and the grips are beautifully carved from ivory with silver covered pommel. Total length is 14 ˝ inches. Very good condition. Minor chips on the ivory grips. A fine heavy piece.
