Rare Old Indian Sword dated 1693 European Blade (?) - 7564
A fine rare piece from India. A straight fullered blade, probably of European origin, inscribed in Arabic letters and dated. The inscription is hard to decipher but the date 1105 ( 1693 in the Gregorian calendar ) is very clear. It probably indicate the date when the blade was employed on this sword, but the blade itself is probably older. The handle is steel, somewhat similar to the classical Tulwar handles but of a much earlier design and with a big ball shaped pommel. The handle is entirely covered with silver koftgari work . Original scabbard covered with black leather with its original steel chape, also decorated with silver koftgari work. Blade length 32 ½. Total length 37 ½ inches. Very good condition to age. Blackened spots on the blade. Part of the silver koftgari is worn on one side of the pommel ball. Top of scabbard restored. A rare piece. |
