Early 19 C. Arab Wahabite Jambiya Dagger - 5746
This long Dagger / Short sword represent a class of Arab jambiya’s of its own. The long curved blade and the strong “I” shaped grip is characteristic to this class, which was the favored side arm of the Wahabite Arabs. In the 19 and later the 20 Century however, it was spread all over the Arabian Peninsula mainly in the Central and West regions of Najd and the Hejaz. The blade is massive, deeply curved, 21 inches long with a heavy central rib. The hilt is steel, with two horn grips riveted to the steel tang with three big rivets, covered with a thin silver sheet. The rear grip is decorated with copper / brass nail work. The scabbard is covered with leather. Two steel rings are attached to the scabbard, probably used as a belt attachment. This dagger was carried on the front in an almost horizontal position. The blade is in good condition, with very minor pitted spots. Minor chips to the edges of the horn grips. The scabbard leather is slightly worn and worm damaged in few places. This is a real and very impressive fighting weapon. All parts (except the lower ring binding) are authentic and original, probably from the early 19 Century. |
