Fine 18 C. Wootz Pesh-Kabz Dagger, India - 7436

This dagger is a Pesh-Kabz , a member of the family of the Karud and a Khybar Knife, but with a re-curving blade. The whole family of such daggers is common to India, Persia and several Central Asian countries. The blade is 8 ½ inches long, heavy, with a pronounced T spine, reinforced edge and thickened armor piercing tip. It is forged from fine wootz, with clear high contrast pattern. The grips are of elephant ivory, the grip strap, bolsters and pommel tip hanging ring are steel. Both the blade and the grip strap are elaborately inlaid with gold koftgari work. Total length 12 ½ inches. Good condition. The right bolster is missing. Shallow pitted spots on the blade mainly near th tip. No scabbard. The slightly up-curving blade and the ivory grips indicate Indian origin, probably late 18 C.
