Large 18 C. Hide Shield From Rajasthan, India - 7362

A beautiful and rare hand painted hide shield from Rajasthan. The Rajasthani hide shields were very famous in their delicate paintings in black red and gold. This one is 26 ½ inches diameter, made from Buffalo hide.. This one shows red flowers on a dark red background, with a central red medallion. The inner face is painted dark red as well. The hand cushion and carrying handles at the internal side are covered with red fabric. The central main bosses are made from beautifully cut and pierced brass. Good condition to age. Slight distorted as a result of age shrink of the hide. A small area on the rim is damaged and paint erased.. This shield is original from the late 18th Century and its beauty is beyond its use as a weapon. |
