Very Good Silver Mounted Yemeni Jambiya - 5754

Very good silver mounted Jambiya from Yemen. Heavy silver scabbard, more than 300 grams of top quality silver filigree work in the scabbard only. This type of scabbards and similar filigree work were most probably done by Jewish Goldsmiths, which were the major producers of high quality fittings for the local Jambiya’s in San’a (however they were not allowed to mount them). The blade is of the classical curved and double edge form with a central rib, 8 inches long and more than 2 ½ inches wide at the heel. The grip and the scabbard are of similar silver work with granulation patterns. The back of the pommel is engraved with Arabic inscription. Very good condition. Minor pitting on the blade, and minor damage to the filigree work. Some old cracks and old silver soldering at the back of the scabbard. The inner wood liner in the scabbard is a later addition. This is a very nice example of The Yemenite Jambiya, probably early 20 Century. The grip and back cover are fitted later as so common in daggers coming from Yemen. A real piece of art. Extremely attractive price especially if ones consider the amount of silver included.
