Good Old Arab Sword Saif Zanzibar - 7316

A very unusual and interesting Arab sword, also known as Saif. It reminds the famous Moroccan Nimcha, but although the hilt style is similar, this sword is coming from the Arabian peninsula, and it is believed to be produced in the island of Zanzibar in the 19th C. The single edge blade is fullered and slightly curved 27 inches long with a short 6 inches false edge. Probably a secondary use of a European cavalry sword blade. The grip is cut and beautifully shaped from a solid piece of dark horn and set with a silver collar. The unusual design of the hilt is attributed to swords produced in Zanzibar, and has a big steel ring forged in one piece with the cross guard and the “D” guard. This sword comes with its original wood scabbard bound at its top with a long leather strip and an engraved silver ring band. Copper tip. Total length is 37 inches. Good condition. Blackened blade with good patina and minor nicks. The hilt ring is cracked. The scabbard copper tip is a later replacement. . An un-common good sword.
