Very Fine Indian Ankus Elephant Goad - 6926

This is an Indian ANKUS, (Elephant Goad), used by the Indian to guide their elephants. Although it is not a pure weapon, it is always attached in Museum and private collections to Indian arms and armor. It also finds extended use as a ceremonial item displayed in parades and other important events. This one is a very fine, high quality one made entirely of steel, 21½ inches long with hollow haft. 4 steel bells within the haft are free to move and rattle when the Ankus is used. The entire piece is heavily inlaid with gold in floral design. This item is original, unusual piece, dated probably to the first half of the 19th C. and a very interesting beautiful addition to any Indian art / or edged weapon collection.
